Sardelle Terushan wakes from three hundred years in a mage stasis shelter, only to realize that she is the last of the Referatu, the sorcerers who once helped protect Iskandia from conquerors. Their subterranean mountain community was blown up in a treacherous sneak attack by soldiers who feared their power. Everyone Sardelle ever knew is dead, and the sentient soulblade she has been bonded to since her youth is buried in the core of the mountain. Further, what remains of her home has been infested by bloodthirsty miners commanded by the descendants of the very soldiers who destroyed her people.

Sardelle needs help to reach her soulblade—her only link to her past and her last friend in the world. Her only hope is to pretend she’s one of the prisoners while trying to gain the commander’s trust. But lying isn’t her specialty, especially when the world has changed so much in the intervening centuries, and if Colonel Zirkander figures out who she truly is, he’ll be duty-bound to sentence her to the only acceptable punishment for sorcerers: death.

    A terrific read with amazing characters named Ridge and a great Sorcerer with a sword named Jaxi. Definitely time for hot popcorn and a cuddly place to read all night long while being entertained with an exceptional series that wins hands down compared to just watching a movie. Gotta go cuz my next book is waiting for me to begin reading. KSW

    I enjoy sci-fi/fantasy and finding new authors, and Lindsay Buroker is a new favorite. Great storyteller, puts her characters together well and the story never drags. A real find for me.

    I was not sure I would like this book by an author unknown to me but I gave myself 2 chapters, as usual, to help make up my mind. I was already into the first chapter and I knew I couldn't quit until I had finished the entire book! Now you get your chance to read they book and decide for yourself whether you finish it or not. I know from experience that not everyone's taste is the same.

    I took a chance on this book - not generally being one for books about star ships - and am really glad that I did. A lively plot, good characters, and fun writing. I would definitely recommend it!

    Finding a new author to follow is rare enough, finding one that writes in an engaging and entertaining manner as this work displays is as surprising as finding a soul sword in the bottom of a mine 😉 The story moves along well, the character development does take a back seat to story progression, but the complete work stands up well. I'll be following the adventure and after submitting this review, I'll get the next book in the series. I suggest you do so too.
