The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

    This is the best book I have ever read. It's so good that this is my third time reading it, now I'm onto the sequel Mountain Shadow.

    Shantaram was an amazing journey through foreign lands I'd never have thought I'd learn of. It's rich in detail and characters and culture, and despite what felt like a lack of "plot", the journey was tumultuous and fascinating. I learned a lot, and I feel as though my eyes were opened to a part of the world whose society and culture was so lovingly captured by the author. A long read, but worth it.
